Petros George Nikolinakos, M.D., Director of Clinical Research

Petros George Nikolinakos, M.D. is board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. He joined NEGACC in September 2009 after three years at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center in Houston.

An author and cancer researcher, Dr. Nikolinakos has published on a variety of clinical and basic science topics such as lung cancer treatment strategies, cancer cell growth factor regulators, anemia in HIV-infected patients and multiple myeloma clinical problem solving in The New England Journal of Medicine, Cancer Research, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Oncogene, American Journal of Hematology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and The Journal of Thoracic Oncology. His abstracts and presentations include American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

Dr. Nikolinakos, who speaks several languages, brings unique national and international expertise to Athens area cancer patients. He graduated summa cum laude and third in his class from University of Debrecen Medical and Health Sciences Center in Debrecen, Hungary. Following his internal medicine residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, he served as chief medical resident and instructor for an additional year. Previously, he was a medical center staff physician in Greece. He later spent four years in internal and emergency room medicine in Bridgeport, Neb, and Pierre, SD.

During a three-year fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Nikolinakos also worked as clinical specialist and staff physician in the medical/surgical intensive care unit. He currently is an attending physician at Athens Regional Medical Center, Landmark Hospital of Athens, and St. Mary’s Healthcare System, and holds memberships in the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Society of Hematology (ASH) and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). He currently serves as co-chair of the lung cancer sub-committee for the Accelerated Community Oncology Research Network (ACORN) and is the director and principal investigator of the clinical trials program at Northeast Georgia Cancer Care.
